Survey of Women's Experiences of Maternity Services by the Healthcare Commission

Healthcare Commission

All NHS Trusts in England that provide maternity services have carried out a survey to find out what women think about the maternity care they have received, as part of a national programme led by the Healthcare Commission.

The women surveyed had all had a baby in January or February 2007 and they were sent questionnaires about 3-4 months after they had their baby. They were asked detailed questions about various aspects of their maternity care.

Maternity units can use this feedback to improve women's experiences of care, by highlighting areas where they perform well and to identify the areas where there is most room for improvement.

Because the results of the surveys are being brought together nationally, the results of different maternity units can be compared. Women choosing where to have their baby can compare different NHS Trusts in their area to see which has provided the type of maternity care they would expect to receive. A national report has also been compiled which can be downloaded from the Healthcare Commission website (pdf link - 884MB)

The survey results also provided evidence for the national Review of Maternity Services
