The Health Committee (a Commons Select Committee) has undertaken an Inquiry into the Provision of Maternity Services. It was undertaken by the Health Committee Maternity Services Sub-committee.

Following the publication of these reports, the Department of Health held a national consultation on how best to improve choice, responsiveness and equity in the NHS and social care, including in the maternity services. The response to the consultation has been published and is avaialbe online

Details of the Inquiry
The last inquiry was in 1991 and resulted in the publication of the Winterton Report. The current Inquiry is in three parts.
In the First Inquiry, the Sub-committee examined the provision of maternity services, and the variation in service provision, across England. In particular the Sub-committee considered:
The Committee also investigated how staffing levels and training affect both the type of birth a woman is likely to have, and the health of her baby in early life.
In the Second Inquiry, the Sub-committee examined inequalities in access to care for pregnant women and for parents and babies from disadvantaged groups
In the Third Inquiry the Sub-Committee looked at Choice in Maternity Services and examined the degree of choice and control a woman has over her maternity care.
