- Hospital tours are available with the first session
of parent education classes. Alternatively hospital tours are arranged on alternate Sundays between 2-4pm. We advise women to call
first to confirm; 020 7363 8135 Larch Ward or 020 7363 8136 Oak Ward.
- Classes are held four times a week but have to be
booked in advance via the Antenatal Clinic, 020 7363 8974/8117. Antenatal classes are facilitated by the midwives in the hospital. We also run classes in the community in collaboration with Health Visitors. Any pregnant woman and her chosen birth
partner can attend 4 sessions in total. We do not have facilities at present
to cater for children. Classes are free.
- We have a midwifery led unit separate from the Central Delivery Suite (CDS) which also has a postnatal 4-bedded
ward attached. Women are usually discharged home after 6-24 hours.
- We have a birthing pool in the midwifery-led unit (Community Midwives Unit), free to use subject to availability.
- Newham University Hospital NHS Trust-maternity department are able to offer a home birth to women where her pregnancy is without any known medical conditions. To help women in their choice of birth Newham facilitates a home birth support group. This is held every month . The venue alters but are held in Early Start community centres. A Creche and lunch are always provided.
Any one can come along to hear about home births, as women who have had a baby at home share their experiences.

- We have numerous protocols which cover antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. Our antenatal protocol was a
combined effort across East London (with Homerton and Royal London hospitals). We are now revising our intrapartum protocol to have a combined East London protocol. Women are encouraged to discuss their care pathway with their midwife.
- Bathroom facilities are available in labour rooms, mainly showers. We have 10 labour rooms on Central
Delivery Suite with 1 adjoining bathroom per 2 rooms. The Community Midwifery Unit
has 3 labour rooms and a pool room with bathroom facilities.
- Postnatal visiting:
- Partners and siblings open visiting apart from 12.30-2.30pm, which is the rest period.
- Other visitors 2.30-8pm.
- Unfortunately we do not have provisions for partners to stay overnight.
- We operate a security system so that visitors can only enter via intercom access.
- We also have a baby tagging security system: all babies have an alarm attached to their name label which is
removed just before discharge from the ward.
- Transport:
- Nearest tube is District line to Plaistow or Upton Park.
- The hospital is served by the 276 and 473 buses.
- There are Pay and Display car park facilities.
- We have recently been awarded the Two Ticks Symbol from the Disability Employment
Service.
